December 27, 2006: FDA has approved oral tablets of generic ondansetron. November 23, 2006: US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved ondansetron, the generic version of Zofran (manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline). Zofran is an antiemetic and approved for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer therapies or after an operation. The significance of this approval is that the branded drug Zofran is considered very expensive and a generic version would present significant savings for patients. The generic versions will be made by Teva Pharmaceuticals in Pennsylvania and SICOR Pharmaceuticals in California. Source: FDA website. You may also visit the branded Zofran website.
