In July, European Medicines Agency rejected Genasense (oblimersen sodium, manufactured by Genta) for metastatic melanoma. Barely a month later, on August 13, 2007, Genta announced that it was making its experimental DNA-based cancer drug available on a named patient/compassionate use basis outside the United States - in other words - the company was going to make the experimental therapy available for sale to healthcare professionals who will choose this drug to treat a patient. Genasense has been in clinical trials for years (in fact, I used to work for a company that had former collaborative agreements with Genta), but the drug’s performance in clinical trials had caused the drug development to stall at many points. The company is looking to sales generated from this compassionate use to help support further development efforts.
