According to UK’s The Evening Standard, “Modern living [is] to blame for cancer epidemic.” The article cites a recent Cancer Research UK report that suggests half of all cancers could be preventable by lifestyle changes, and modern living has caused an increase in other types of cancers that were rare decades ago. Malignant melanoma received quite a bit of attention as the incidence was cited to be up by 43 per cent over this decade. Other cancers linked to unhealthy lifestyles included kidney cancer (”more common in smokers and overweight” people), uterine cancer, and oral cancer. The study did suggest that the survival rates of most cancers are increasing due to modern medicine. Comments to this article from this readers included at least one that was skeptical of the study design, as the commentator called this study “flawed” for not accounting for population specific information, among other factors that can affect such trends.
