Gleevec or imatinib mesylate (by Novartis; known as Glivec in EU) has been approved to treat dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans - a skin tumor, Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia, hypereosinophilic syndrome, aggressive systemic mastocytosis, and some myeloproliferative disorders. New safety information on Gleevec has been reported in patients using Gleevec. A recent Nature Medicine article reported that 10 patients treated with Gleevec developed reduced heart function and experienced congestive heart failure (CHF), which means the heart has reduced ability to pump blood. Many of these patients however have comorbid problems that may increase their risk to CHF, including high blood pressure, diabetes, or a previous history of heart disease.
